The Florese Family: A Legacy of Italian Hospitality in San Francisco

The Florese family’s journey began, like many great stories, across the Atlantic in Southern Italy. Rooted in generations of home-cooked meals, lively gatherings, and a passion for la dolce vita, the Floreses carried more than just luggage when they arrived in San Francisco—they brought with them the heart of Italian culture.

In 1997, their dream took shape when they purchased Mona Lisa Restaurant in the heart of North Beach, San Francisco's historic "Little Italy." With its checkered tablecloths, the aroma of simmering sauces, and the sound of laughter over glasses of Chianti, Mona Lisa quickly became more than just a restaurant—it became a neighborhood institution. The Floreses weren’t just serving food; they were serving family tradition on every plate.

Expanding the Table: Growth Rooted in Tradition

In April 2025, the Florese family unveiled their latest venture: Steps of Rome Trattoria. A tribute to both their roots and the timeless charm of Roman dining, Steps of Rome captures the spirit of a true trattoria—unpretentious, lively, and centered around simple, exquisite food.

Nestled in a city that celebrates diversity and culinary excellence, Steps of Rome is more than a restaurant—it’s a celebration of the Florese family’s journey. From rustic pastas and slow-cooked sauces to the warm embrace every guest feels upon entering, the trattoria embodies decades of passion, perseverance, and the belief that every meal should feel like coming home.

A Family Legacy, A Community Treasure

In a city known for its iconic hills, fog-kissed bay, and rich culinary heritage, the Florese family has carved out a name synonymous with authentic Italian hospitality. From their first venture in 1997 to the grand opening of Steps of Rome Trattoria in April 2025, the Florese story is one of tradition, resilience, and a deep love for sharing the flavors of Italy with San Francisco.

From Italy to North Beach: The Beginning of a Dream

For 25 years, Mona Lisa thrived, beloved by locals and visitors alike for its authentic dishes and warm, welcoming atmosphere. But the Florese family wasn’t done.

In 2022, they expanded their culinary footprint with two bold moves. First came Mona Lisa Mare e Monti, a refined take on coastal and countryside Italian cuisine, blending the flavors of the sea (mare) and mountains (monti). That same year, they preserved a piece of San Francisco history by purchasing The Old Clam House, the city’s oldest continuously operating restaurant. With this acquisition, the Floreses not only honored their own heritage but also safeguarded a local treasure, blending classic San Francisco seafood traditions with their signature Italian flair.

The Next Chapter: Steps of Rome Trattoria

Today, with multiple establishments under their care, the Florese family remains deeply involved in every aspect of their restaurants. Each generation brings fresh energy while honoring the values that started it all: authenticity, hospitality, and a love for bringing people together around the table.

As Steps of Rome Trattoria opens its doors, it marks not just a new chapter for the Floreses but also a renewed promise to San Francisco—a promise to continue serving tradition, one plate at a time.
